Here it is, my first every tutorial, and first set of renders using POV Ray. This tutorial explains how to create the European 4-1 weave, one of the first weaves that all new maillers learn, myself included. This is a fairly common place tutorial, one that most people who make tutorials for maille, make, so I guess European 4-1 is a staple weave to first learn and to first teach.

Expect more tutorials from me in the upcoming weeks, especially as I approach the official launch of my website (still several weeks off more than likely)

comments greatly appreciated on anything from use of POV Ray to the successful explanation of how to construct the weave.

I hope so. So far I'm not doing so well. I have a small block that's 3 rigns high and 4 rings wide.

In my gallery I have a photo of a some gauntlets I made, the rings were large and thin which made them really weak and "easy" to work. The first gauntlet had about 256 rings at took 10 hours, Now I can do about as many rings at half the inner diameter and a larger gauge (meaning they're "harder" to work) in 40ish minutes, you really pick it up quick once you're used to it.

Really? I worked for a couple of hours, and I have a piece maybe 2 inches by 2 inches, but I sort of got the hang of it. Also, thank you so much for answering all my questions.

Ok. Thank you. Tomorrow I'm going to go out and buy stuff. Do those pliers double as decent wire cutters? I'm trying to make a master shopping list.
1 pair flat nosed pliers
1 pair bent nosed pliers
18g bright aluminum wire
1 1/4" dowel rod
anything else you think I need to get started?

ahh, cutters, that's one thing I'm not so versed in since I buy most of my rings pre-cut. Alot of people like to use hand-held bolt cutters though.

something to clamp one of of the wire you're winding while you wind it is really helpful, but alot of people have different methods of winding wire. I suggest before you tackle supplies that you make sure to read up. The very first source I found which helped me tremendously was this: [link] it'll give you real basic information including stuff about supplies.

Thank you so much for all your help. I couldn't find bright aluminum, so I got galavnized steel instead. Just a question on weaving. Do you lay it on a table or other flat surface, or do you do it in the air or something.

when I started I laid it out until I had a good enough understanding of how the weave worked. I even had to pin it to a block of styrofoam for a little while. But as I began to know how to work the rings I began just holding the piece in my hand. If you can't hold it in your hand and see what you're doing yet, don't worry it'll come to you.

Ok. What does 18g and 1/4''. 1/4" is the diameter, right? But then what's the other number?

:icongnomeofmaille:
18g is wire gauge, or thickness, the lower the number the thicker the wire., and yes 1/4" is the inner diameter of the rings

Thank you so much. I'm trying to make a simple collar and maybe hang a pendant off it. What size and material would you reccomend?
